Show Of Hands Biograhy
Show Of Hands are songwriter Steve Knightley and multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer. Show Of Hands create their own unique musical style by combining the melodic and narrative strengths of English and Celtic music with instruments and textures from other traditions. Their instruments include the cuatro from South America, the cello-mandolin from Eastern Europe, the slide guitar from the USA, and the mandolin from Italy, all performed with a 'rock' mentality, honed from playing in electric bands and in bars and pubs. The structure of the Show Of Hands business is fiercely independent, with most of their albums being released on their own label. As part of this 'cottage industry' policy they seek to use local businesses and thus their management, their instrument maker, equipment manufacturers and even accountants are all based in the West Country of England. The ideal is to stay directly in touch with their fans, which is done through active promotion of their mailing list, being available at shows to talk to people and encouraging more people to sing the songs. Fans are also encouraged to become promoters themselves - to create more local venues and to bring Show Of Hands closer to local communities. This works extremely well, especially in rural areas of England where the nearest arts centre or theatre is often miles away. As part of this close connection to 'place', rural imagery has been a recurring theme throughout Steve Knightley's songs. He finds a rich source of characters and settings in the countryside and uses them as a basis for melodic and narrative songs. Although these songs often have a specific regional setting, they have universal appeal and are well received around the world. |
